Allen Approaching a Decision Talks Sooner Offer - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
In recent years Oklahoma's presence in Houston has been a growing thing with more and more offers and commitments hailing from the biggest city in the Big 12 region. In the class of 2014 Oklahoma had been a bit quiet in 'Space City' but that seems to be changing and one of the signs of that change is the Sooners recent offer to Humble Summer Creek three-star linebacker Dakota Allen.
While it would be easy to think that Allen's offer was born out of the Sooners recent camp in Houston, allen, who already held offers from Colorado, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Illinois among many others, had heard very little from Oklahoma prior to Tuesday.
"It really came from left field, I hadn't talked to any OU coaches until Tuesday and that's when they offered. It was coach Coach (Jerry) Montgomery that called. I think they got a hold of my film and the linebacker coach liked it and they offered."

OU Gets Started at Linebacker with Sooners Legacy - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
On the day that Allen, Texas linebacker, Tay Evans received his Oklahoma offer, he thought about committing right then and there but said he wanted to take one more visit to Norman to get a better look at the entire campus. Yesterday the 6-foot-3 and 202-pound prospect made it to the Sooner's campus along with his brother and other family and friends and was able to get a more in depth look he wanted to get. After that his decision was made, though it turns out it had already been made even before he arrived for the visit.
"I had already known coming in that I wanted to commit. I just wanted to see the whole campus and just see the environment and talk to a few of the players. We were with coach (Tim) Kish the whole day. We just did a campus tour and we watched them work out a little bit. Then we watched this video and then I talked with coach Kish a little bit more," Evans said.
It was then during a conversation in Kish's office that the Sooner legacy decided to inform his future position coach that he was ready to be a Sooner.
"I was in coach Kish's office and he was talking and saying how the linebackers were in the program and he was like, 'we really want to get you on board'. And I just said 'I'm sold coach and ready to be a Sooner'," he replied.
Kish immediately started to inform other coaches on the staff including head coach, Bob Stoops and offensive coordinator, Josh Heupel, who also had a hand in recruiting the Lone Star State's No. 85 overall prospect, though he was the target of a joke Kish decided to pull.

OU's Stoops' home burglarized; vehicle stolen (The SportsXchange)
Evans' Wait for a Sooner Offer is Over - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
In the state of Texas one of the top dogs on the 5A football scene is the Allen Eagles. Last year the Eagles won the 5A Division-1 State Championship and one of the key components on that team was 2014 three-star linebacker, Tay Evans. The 6-foot-3 and 202-pound Sooner legacy put on a stellar performance in the playoffs and schools took notice. Oklahoma was one of those programs and this past spring sent offensive coordinator, Josh Heupel up to the school as well as linebackers coach Tim Kish, twice. Yet, an offer was not made.
Evans says he was still in contact with both Oklahoma coaches but it wasn't anything of real significance. That is until this past Tuesday.
"I talked to coach Heupel and coach Kish like every now and then but nothing like that (serious). Then he (Kish) messaged me on Facebook (Tuesday) and he said can I give him a call. So I called him and that's when he said he was extending an offer," Evans replied.

Game replays could reshape CFB in summer months - Oklahoma (Rivals)
SoonerScoop.com Editor
Over the weekend Fox Sports Oklahoma did something smarter than what ESPN has been doing lately. Instead of re-airing mind-numbingly boring spring football games like ESPN has been doing, Fox Sports Oklahoma re-aired OU's wins over West Virginia and Texas Tech.
Like most of you, I'm hurtin' for some college football right now. The games on FSOK were a nice jolt.
What was most noticeable in watching the West Virginia and Texas Tech games back-to-back were the following:
OU still used linebackers when they played Texas Tech. They started out the game with a lot of Tom Wort and Corey Nelson, but finished the game with a lot more Nelson and Frank Shannon.
They also held Texas Tech to 13 points.
Against West Virginia, the Sooners started out with linebackers and shut down the West Virginia running game. Fox sideline reporter Petros Papadakis even had some of the most unfortunate analysis you'll ever see in a college football game.
He said numerous times at the start of the game that West? Virginia better stop trying to use Tavon Austin as a running back. After he picked up a nice gain early, Papadakis then said, 'They better not put him back there again.'
Eventually Austin rushed for 344 yards on the ground and the Fox producers stopped asking Papadakis for sideline analysis.
The other thing most noticeable in those games was OU's offensive line.
The Texas game sure covered up OU's failure to run the ball last year. OU's offensive line was not physical against either WVU or Tech. Damien Williams eventually opened up some running room in both games, but it seemed as if Josh Heupel was banging his head against the wall trying to establish a run game early in both contests.
That's not really on Heupel. OU just can't push anyone around at the start of football games anymore. They can't set the tone.
That's obviously a big part of what led to Stoops making the decision to jettison his offensive line staff in favor of Bill Bedenbaugh.
As for how Mike Stoops convinced himself fewer linebackers were better than Nelson and Shannon last season? That's still a mystery to me.
I don't think Sooner fans should be worried at all about the talent level of their linebackers right now. Even Aaron Franklin did some really nice things in that game. And now the Sooners don't have to worry about how to tell Wort he's been passed over by more explosive players at the position.
*************************
Speaking of college football broadcasts, it's time to look at revamping those as well. The notion coaches like Bob Stoops need to have weekly shows during the season is an outdated concept.
Stoops used to have a call-in show, but he no longer takes calls since his show is televised regionally. That was just a recipe for disaster anyway. I don't blame Stoops.
The calls stopped quickly after last year's loss to Kansas State. This was probably the reason why.
These shows are unnecessary. The questions Stoops answers during his weekly press conference with the local media are rarely trumped by anything produced during his mid-week shows.
My thought after watching the replays this weekend is why not have an offseason replay of last year's best games involving the OU coaching staff.
Call it the director's cut of college replay shows.
Let ESPN and Fox broadcasts stand on their own. But have cut-ins with replays from Stoops, Heupel and Mike Stoops talking about what happened during those games.
You could cue the replays in studio and almost make it like Stoops was watching the game along with you. You could have Stoops comment on what he was yelling at an official about, why he was mad at a player as he was coming off the field.
You could have Heupel throw Patton and Kittle under the bus when a called run to Damien Williams was thrown for a five-yard loss.
You could have Mike Stoops squirm all over again as Tavon Austin sliced apart his defense and explain why he thought Julian Wilson would make a good middle linebacker.
Then Bob could make Mike promise to never play without a linebacker again during the broadcast.
All of this would be throughout the summer months when these games were way behind them. Heck, you could even hold summer press conferences to promote these new 'Summer Football Series' broadcasts.
Give people a chance to hear about the latest in OU football and get them jacked up for the upcoming season.
Are you telling me as highly rated as the initial broadcasts are rated that something like summer replays with Stoops, Stoops and Heupel commenting on the games wouldn't draw huge ratings?
College football is so popular in Oklahoma, you'd have to think there is still some meat left on the bone of these games. I bet these broadcasts would pull in ratings just behind the actual games.
That's my grand idea college football broadcasters.
*******************************
Summer workouts have started and we'll start getting more information to you on that front. We may even make that the main focus of this week's Sooner Scoop. The thing I'm most interested in is the leadership changes inside this program.
Blake Bell is the type of guy that can be a great leader for the offense. Gabe Ikard and Bronson Irwin are certainly guys that lead in workouts.
The defense is where you worry about offseason leadership. Aaron Colvin is very motivated, but he's not really that guy that gets in other people's faces. Is that changing? OU is so young and inexperienced at so many positions.
I don't see Jordan Phillips or Chuka Ndulue being vocal leaders in the summer. Geneo Grissom is a quiet one too. That's the biggest concern with this group in the offseason. Corey Nelson is not an in-your face personality like Travis Lewis was.
That unit has taken such a beating, I'm not sure anyone feels comfortable stepping up and speaking out. That's the biggest hurdle for this defense over the next two months.
One of the keys for the offense will be LaColtan Bester stepping up and being in great shape this fall. Jay Norvell told me recently if Bester had come in last year in better shape, he would have made a bigger impact.
Now that he's been in Norman and in great shape, they see a true difference maker there.
Starting Sooner DL arrested on drunk-driving complaint (NBC Sports)
AP And now we present Exhibit No. 1,827 as to why the nerves of coaches all across the country are frayed at this time of the year.
The latest FBS program to run into an offseason off-field issue is Oklahoma, with defensive tackle Chuka Ndulue facing a drunk-driving complaint following an early-morning run-in with campus police.
According to the Daily Oklahoman, Ndulue was arrested shortly after four a.m. local time this morning on a complaint of driving under the influence. No details of what led to the initial traffic stop have been released.
There has been no comment from the school on what if any punitive measures the lineman may be facing, although the paper notes that head coach Bob Stoops normally hands out a one-game suspension for incidents such as this.
Last season, Ndulue played in all 13 games and led the Sooners with five sacks. He was moved from end to tackle this spring.

Sooners Trying to Climb to Top of the Mountain - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
It's no secret that Alabama is the 'King of the Hill' in college football right now. Be it on Saturdays in the fall or on the recruiting scene where they have been bringing in top-ranked classes year in and year out thanks in part to winning three of the last four National Championships . An offer from the Crimson Tide is something of a status symbol for many prospects right now and that includes the 2015 class.
As evidence, Orange (Texas) West Orange-Stark safety prospect, Deionte Thompson went to a Jr. Day in Tuscaloosa, Ala. back in February, received an offer and wasted little time before committing.
That commitment to the SEC powerhouse though hasn't halted other programs from offering Thompson who boasts a growing list that includes the likes of Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, Utah and one of his more recent offers - Oklahoma. The Sooners offered the 6-foot-3 and 172-pound prospect shortly after the Satellite camp on June 9 that was cancelled due to weather in Houston that he was present at.
"They have been recruiting me, I think, the first day they came to the school was in April sometime. Coach (Tim) Kish told me about the camp. I just decided that I wanted to go to Oklahoma's camp because it was closer than all the other camps were. It got rained out and I didn't get to perform but I felt like I was going to perform really well that day," Thompson replied.

Recruits sound off on major recruiting keys - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
SoonerScoop.com Editor
CHICAGO --Earlier this month in Chicago, we checked in with a lot of the top prospects in the Big 12 region to get their take on the recruiting process. Some of that feedback was posted in this story earlier from Chicago.
But now that we're back and settled in, it's time to recap some of the other more interesting aspects of our conversations with recruits.
All of these responses come from recruits who participated in the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour in Chicago. They all have multiple offers to major schools, and are all going through a fairly intense recruiting process.
So here are some interesting looks into what makes them tick.
SCOOPHD: SIGHTS AND SOUNDS FROM THE RIVALS CHALLENGE
video by Eddie Radosevich
I first asked the recruits: Do you pay attention to team recruiting rankings? Meaning, do you look at how teams are ranked in recruiting at this time of the year and does that matter to you?
"Yeah. I look at it every once in a while," said one top junior at the event. When pressed on how often he looks, it became apparent, he was being a bit coy.
"I check it about every day," he admitted. "I'm always on it. I go on Texas A&M boards and Texas' boards. My dad has a subscription so I look at it sometimes."
Another top prospect in the region said he didn't care about team recruiting rankings. He preferred to be a contrarian.
"Naw, not really," he said. "I'd be the totally opposite. I'd rather go somewhere I could make them better."
But that national recruit, who has chosen to play in the SEC, should his verbal commitment stick, was almost alone in his thinking,
"Yes sir. I look at that a lot," said one of the region's top receivers. "Just about every day."
Some players chose to look less at the immediate success and look more into recent history.
"I don't usually look at (team rankings)," said one Big 12 region defensive back. "I look at what they did in previous years and who all's gonna stay and who left. Other than that I don't usually go all into that detail."
COACHING STAFF CONCERNS
With so much talk about coaching changes at Oklahoma over the past year, and so much talk about new kids on the block like Texas A&M, we were curious how much players pay attention to the types of coaches recruiting them.
Does it matter if a position coach is younger? Do players still look for coaches who have a stellar reputation and experience in the college game?
Are players looking for coaches that know the songs on their IPods?
"(Younger coaches) can relate more," said one Big 12 region defensive lineman. "They are a little bit cooler most times. It would be good playing for a great coach but it was also be great to play for a young coach."
Players were pretty clear across the board. They want coaches they can identify with, even if they aren't known commodities in the coaching world.
It seems in almost every case, recruits are as interested in having a good relationship with a coach as much as they are interested in having someone who can develop them as a player.
For some, that even means they are willing to dive into the unknown.
"I could use Tech for instance," said one of the top offensive players in the region. "They've got a lot of commits because their whole coaching staff is energetic. They're young just like you are so they know where you're coming from."
"I actually do like younger coaches," said another defensive back. "They can relate more to you, they're real cool and I mean, they know exactly what you listen to, they know everything about you."
I didn't get the sense that being an older coach is a deal breaker for any recruit attending the Rivals Challenge. But the key with all of them is having a relationship with someone who can identify with them.
Whether that be through personality, musical tastes or age.
THE NEWCOMERS
Last year we saw the rise of Ole Miss in the recruiting game. I was curious what this year's crop of national recruits thought about these schools that aren't showing championship results on the field, but are making waves with recruits.
In the earlier article we wrote, I asked players to rate schools on their "swag" from 1 to 10.
One recruit from the Big 12 region, who has an Oklahoma offer, gave Ole Miss a perfect 10.
"The coaching staff is real energetic," he said. "They're not real young, but they're energetic. They get top recruits and they're getting new jerseys and stuff."
Another recruit in the region, an offensive linemen who isn't considering Oklahoma told me about Ole Miss, "I'm going to have to see a lot more out of them this year." He still gave them a 7.5 on the swag scale.
Texas Tech is another school trying to make a swag splash with new helmets, new uniforms and an energetic approach. Hey, Texas A&M turned it around, so why not Tech?
Not so fast said one top receiver in the Big 12 region.
"Texas Tech has a new coaching staff so I'm not really sure about them until they play," he said.
But what about the swag?
"I think most recruits like that," he continued. "They like that Oregon stuff. That's probably why most draw in and try to commit to them. They want to look nice on the field."
What about Baylor? They are really making a push with gold chrome facemasks and cinematic trailers of their uniform unveilings?
"I really haven't paid too much attention to Baylor," said one top defensive lineman.
That same lineman cut to the chase on what really matters for most recruits.
"Everybody looks good when they're winning," he said.
NEW MONEY, OLD MONEY
One last peek into the perception of teams in the region. How about Texas A&M? Everyone knows they are the hot team right now.
There was no doubt their message of playing in the SEC, winning and swag is winning over recruits. They are the hottest recruiting team in the country right now.
"Them being in the SEC and being a winning program in the SEC is a big factor," said one defensive giant in the region with offers from A&M, Texas and Oklahoma. "That's one of the main reasons (I'm considering them). I know Oklahoma and Texas are top notch programs. But A&M has their program in the right direction but it won't take Texas that long to get things turned around."
Another top recruit who is considering OU, Texas and Texas A&M didn't have kind words for the Longhorns right now.
"I don't want to shoot them down but right now they're not the school they were in the past," he said. "I grew up a Texas fan. Right now they're not where they were. It won't take long to get them to turn it around."

Bonney Preparing to Narrow his List - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
After not closing on any Houston, Texas products in the 2012 class, last year the Sooners signed numerous targets from within or around Space City. This year Oklahoma is hoping to continue that trend with the 2014 class and one prospect they have their eyes set on is Houston Lamar safety prospect, John Bonney.
Over the last few weeks the 6-foot-1 and 183-pound defensive back has been busy attending multiple camps at Texas and Rice as well as satellite camps that have come through Houston that included Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech as well as Oklahoma.
The three-star didn't work out at any of these camps but instead used it as a chance to speak with the coaches. On June 9 while at the Oklahoma camp that ended up getting cancelled due to inclement weather, Bonney got the chance to speak with defensive coordinator, Mike Stoops while the rain was pouring down.

However, with the changes in the off-season memories can be renewed and on Friday first year defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery reeled his first recruit into Norman.

Newell said several members of the Stoops family were home when the burglary occurred, but no one was injured.
''There were people at the house at the time,'' she said. Newell would not confirm whether Stoops was at the house. He and several Oklahoma players were in Wichita, Kan., on Wednesday night for an appearance at an OU Club of Wichita event.
Newell said a number of items were reported missing after the burglary, including a vehicle.
''It was personal property and my understanding is a vehicle as well,'' she said.
Newell said she was not aware of any other burglaries reported in the same neighborhood recently. She also said she did not know of additional security precautions that were being taken following the burglary.

That player is Irving (Texas) Ranchview defensive tackle Brandon Glenn. The 6-foot-3, 274-pound prospect came to Norman this morning thinking he might commit and not surprisingly it was during time spent with Montgomery in which he pulled the trigger.
"We got there, around 9 a.m. and they showed us around the campus and we were just talking and we had a little silent moment and I told him 'coach I think I'm ready to commit'," Glenn said.

Sooners Building 'A Great Relationship' with Florida LB - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
Around college football the 'non-committable offer' has become a flash word working to further confuse the already convoluted process of recruiting.
That being said, it's not a phrase that had been mentioned much in regard to Oklahoma's recruiting until in the last week when Oklahoma went from a 'type' of offer to Palm Bay (Fla.) Bayside three-star linebacker Greg MicLisse. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound prospect had reported an offer from the Sooners back in the spring but the situation became more 'real' in the past week.
"I had an offer way back but I talked to coach (Tim) Kish and he said they were going to wait until he got to the school and had a chance to see my offer, and now it's a committable offer," Miclisse stated.

Roundtable: Big 12 surprises - Texas Tech (Rivals)
RedRaiderSports.com StaffWhich Big 12 team will be the league's biggest surprise this season? Which will be its biggest disappointment?
Chris Level: I don't know why, but the media will likely repeat the same mistake they have made for years and years and shortchange Bill Snyder's Kansas State team. Surely they won't be as good or win as many close games as they did the season before? That's exactly what I said last summer. Oops. The Wildcats will likely be picked to finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 and, based on that, I think they are the team most likely to surprise this year in the league. The funny thing is that this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
Most disappointing? You would have to pick either Texas, TCU or one of the Oklahoma schools based on where everyone will likely pick them. I don't feel good about this answer like I did with Kansas State but I'm going with Oklahoma State. At some point the turnover in coaches, specifically coordinators has to catch up to Mike Gundy's Cowboys, doesn't it? That's my pick anyway.
Aaron Dickens: I pretty much nailed this question last year. Let's see if I can duplicate the feat for 2013.
High external expectations have to be in place in order for a team to be a disappointment, so that rules out all but a few Big 12 teams heading into the 2013 football season -- Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and TCU.
Out of that foursome, the Sooners are the only team that will take the field with a first-year starter this fall. I'm not as high on David Ash or Casey Pachall as most, and Clint Chelf doesn't have more than half of a season of experience, but OU's Blake Bell is a total unknown outside of the Belldozer gimmick.
Bell won't have much time to ease into the starting role, either. He'll open Big 12 play against West Virginia in his second start and, three weeks later, will face Notre Dame in South Bend. To top it all off, only two of Oklahoma's final seven games are in Norman. Gulp.
I'm tempted to pick West Virginia as my Big 12 team to surprise, but the Mountaineers' schedule is brutal -- no back-to-back home dates and a six-game stretch in conference play with four road games.
Instead, I'll reluctantly go with Kansas State. The Wildcats will likely be picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference (again) in the preseason and Bill Snyder has coached worse teams than this to top-half conference finishes, so why should we expect anything different this year? I'm done betting against him.
Adam Rosen: With the departure of 2012 Heisman finalist Collin Klein, along with numerous defensive standouts, Kansas State is expected to regress from last season's Big 12 championship in a major way.
The return of skill players John Hubert, Tyler Lockett, Tramaine Thompson and all five starters on the offensive line should help Daniel Sams or Jake Waters transition into the vacant quarterback position with ease. Both guys have the potential to enhance the offense's productivity this season.
The defense returns very few starters, and must rely on JUCO transfers, such as Dakorey Johnson, Devon Nash and Travis Green, to help fill the void. They may not dominate, but it's almost certain they'll be formidable under Bill Snyder.
Kansas State has been tabbed in the bottom four next season, but it wouldn't be shocking to see them surprise again with a top three finish.
Oklahoma State's ability to take the next step, and win games outside of Stillwater (Oklahoma), similar to the Weeden-to-Blackmon led squads that combined to go 10-1 on the road in 2010 and 2011, will decide if they're challenging for the conference title or merely just another competitive Big 12 football team.
Last season, the Cowboys went 1-4 on the road with their only win a six point squeaker against the lowly Jayhawks. The defense gave up 21 points and 166 total yards more per game on the road compared to home, and the Pokes' quarterback brigade combined for their five worst ratings on the road last season.
Oklahoma State was also -10 in the turnover battle in those five road games. The previous squads posted fortuitous turnover margins of +1 (2010) and +11 (2011) on the road in their conference title runs.
Eight conference wins has been the mark for the Big 12 champion since the conference went to ten teams, and seven conference wins could easily be the mark in what is expected to be a down year for the conference in 2013.
Oklahoma State could finish in the top half of the conference, but they won't have enough wins to be a title contender like the media and oddsmakers are projecting.
Zach DiSchiano: They thought Baylor was going to fall off when Robert Griffin went to the NFL. Then Nick Florence shocked the world with a stellar season, leading the BU offense to 44.5 points per game -- good for fourth in the nation. Now they're saying Baylor is going to fall off without Florence. I don't think so. Maybe Baylor figured out how to properly prepare quarterbacks to be successful, or maybe it's just the team's style of play that inflates quarterback's numbers, but either way, junior Bryce Petty is poised to have a great year. With the help of running backs Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin, the Bears offense should be as prolific as ever.
Baylor has a cupcake nonconference schedule, and its first two Big 12 opponents -- West Virginia and Kansas State -- are likely to have down years after the departure of their respective Heisman candidates. After that, the Bears face Iowa State at home and Kansas on the road, which should be another two wins. Realistically, the Bears have a legitimate shot at starting the season 7-0 before taking on Oklahoma at home.
Defensively, the Bears are starting eight seniors, who made strides of improvement during the last few games of the 2012 season. After giving up points in bunches for the majority of the season, the Bears moved into the top three in total defense in the Big 12. In their bowl game against UCLA, the Bears limited star running back Jonathan Franklin, a 1,700-yard rusher, to just 34 yards on 14 carries.
Baylor ended the season on a four-game winning streak, something that should continue through the first seven games of the upcoming season. The Bears finished fifth in the Big 12 last season, and after all the defensive improvements and consistency of their high-octane offense, I expect them to move into the top three in 2013.
As for the league's biggest disappointment, there's no one in the game better at picking up two yards and a touchdown than Oklahoma's Blake Bell. But now that he has taken the reigns from Landry Jones, he is going to have to learn to do a lot more than just fall forward. The 6-foot-6 quarterback is heading into his junior season without ever throwing a touchdown pass, which doesn't bode well for Sooner fans.
The schedule for Bell and the Sooners is no free ride to 10 wins this year -- the team has road games against the conference's top teams from 2012, including Baylor, Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Notre Dame will look to take down Oklahoma at home after beating the Sooners on the road last season.
Along with Kenny Stills and star offensive tackle Lane Johnson, Oklahoma lost key players on the defensive line and secondary. The team depth chart is looking like it will start two true freshmen at both safety positions, which is a dangerous move in the pass-heavy Big 12. On the offensive side of the ball, the Sooners do return running back Damien Williams, whom they will have to rely heavily upon to stay competitive in the conference. However, as Kansas clearly demonstrated last season, winning in the Big 12 requires an elite passing game, not rushing. That's why the success of the Sooners next season is completely contingent upon the play of Blake Bell, and also why they are likely to go 7-5, finish in the middle of the conference and limp into an underwhelming bowl game.
Stoops and the Sooners Say Aloha - Oklahoma [$$] (Rivals)
Bob Stoops may have been the head man in Norman for quickly approaching 15 years and for all of his staff's national recruiting efforts at various points in that span he has, according to Rivals, never recruited a player from Hawaii. That changed recently, and not surprisingly it came directly due to one of Stoops' newest coaching hires.
New defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery had a unique connection to star Honolulu Farrington defensive end Breiden Fehoko and the two have already begun to build a relationship from that bond.
"You know coach Montgomery, he is very familiar with the Polynesian players and a good family friend of ours is a friend of coach and he said 'coach take a look at this guy', and coach Montgomery turned on my tape and gave me the offer," Fehoko recalled.
"I know a lot about Oklahoma, there is so much history about Oklahoma. Good guys, Adrian Peterson, the greats that come out of there. The newer guys like Sam Bradford, all these guys and they've built the Oklahoma name, the Boomer Sooner to where it has become. Everyone appreciating it now, Oklahoma an offer from them means a lot."

Tarp's Monday Thoughts - Texas A&M (Rivals)
AggieYell.com PublisherTexas A&M consistently finished behind Texas and Oklahoma in recruiting since the arrival of head coaches Mack Brown and Bob Stoops in the late 1990's. However, that still didn't stop the Aggies from having productive offenses during that time frame. With the proliferation of the spread offense throughout the Texas high school ranks, there always seemed to be a sufficient amount of high quality skill position talent to go around for more than just a couple of programs and less and less of the state's talent found its way to the defensive side of the ball. As a result, the Big 12 as a whole became more and more of an offensive league and like most programs in the conference the Aggies benefitted from the trend. The 2005 through 2007 A&M teams were in the top 20 nationally in rushing and the 2009 through 2012 units were in the top 25 nationally in total offense. The Aggies even had an impressive array of skill talent go to the NFL including quarterbacks Reggie McNeal, Stephen McGee, Jerrod Johnson, and Ryan Tannehill.
On the flip side, the state started producing fewer and fewer quality defenders, especially in the front seven. Although A&M's offenses compared favorably nationally with most high powered attacks, Texas and Oklahoma (along with help from out of state programs such as LSU) were typically winning big and playing in BCS bowls. Defensive prospects like to play for winners that put people in the pros and those two descriptions fit the Sooners and Longhorns. As a result, those programs dominated defensive recruiting within the state of Texas and left the Aggies searching for prospects that those schools didn't want due to a lack of size, speed, or that they would have to be projected to a different position than what they played in high school.
This troubling trend had begun for A&M when Ty Warren, Jerod Penright, Sammy Davis, and Terrence Kiel came aboard in the 1999 recruiting class. That gave A&M a dominant defensive tackle/end, a quality pass rusher, a lockdown corner, and a far ranging free safety. However, when they graduated in 2002, the last of the great Wrecking Crew defenses under R.C. Slocum and Jackie Sherrill went with them.
Between 2003 and 2011, the Aggies landed just nine Rivals 250 prospects on the defensive side of the ball. Even worse, A&M didn't do a lot with the quality talent that it acquired. Prospects like Chris Smith, William Morrisey, Derrick Stephens, Paul Freeney, Ivan Robinson (still on the team), Anthony Lewis, and Rod Davis never started a game. The most productive of the group were Justin Warren and Tony Jerod-Eddie.
It's not to say that A&M didn't have some success during that time. Defensive end Von Miller weighed 210 pounds coming out of high school and was not offered by Texas, yet helped lead the Aggies to the best season of the 2003 to 2011 span, won the Butkus Award as the nation's top linebacker, and was the number two pick in the 2011 NFL draft. However, the talent and development on that side of the ball paled in comparison to that at Texas and Oklahoma. For example, Texas signed 60 players between 2002 and the present who were Rivals 250 prospects. That's an average of five a year and that total often included the state's top rated front seven defenders including DT Malcolm Brown in 2012, linebacker Steve Edmond in 2011, Jackson Jeffcoat in 2010, Sergio Kindle in 2006, defensive tackle Rodrique Wright in 2002, and end Alex Okafor in 2009. Oklahoma's signed 48 Rivals 250 prospects nationally in that time including R.J. Washington, Demarcus Granger, and Gerald McCoy (all of whom were the top rated prospect in the country at their position).
The Aggies couldn't stop the run against quality opponents outside of the Big 12 and couldn't stop passing teams within it. Due in large part to these trends, the Aggies finished just once in the top 25 between 2002 and 2011 even while they were finishing in the top 25 nationally in recruiting. Their classes always included a sprinkling of four stars on defense that neither the Longhorns or Sooners wanted. In contrast (and in an increasingly pass happy league), Oklahoma and Texas had the front seven talent to stop the run, rush the passer, and consequently finish at or near the top in total defense. The Sooners and Longhorns won a couple of national titles, played for four more, and made multiple BCS appearances. Not only, the loss of a prospect like linebacker Corey Nelson in 2010 on signing day to the Sooners was considered a disaster. For Oklahoma and a depth chart full of four stars, it was more of a statement to take him away from A&M; for the Aggies, it was considered a real blow to their talent level.
However, things began to change in 2012 with the arrival of new A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. Considered an offensive coach, Sumlin went out and stole four star corner Devante Harris from the Sooners after his arrival. He also went out and signed six defensive linemen. Although none of them were four star prospects, Sumlin understood the need for bodies at the position and made it a point of emphasis. It was an indication that once Sumlin got better coaches in place and improved A&M's record that things would be changing in front seven recruiting.
However, the change came faster than even Sumlin probably anticipated for two reasons. First, defensive line coach Terry Price was hired in the spring of 2012 after former coach Terrell Williams left to go to the NFL. Williams helped put together the 2012 class and helped kick start the 2013 class, but it was Price who cranked everything up a notch. A&M wound up signing four four-star rated defensive line prospects, taking Dallas Kimball defensive tackle Justin Manning away from Oklahoma, where his older brother DeMarcus Granger played. They also nabbed defensive end Daeshon Hall on signing day from Washington. In all, the Aggies signed 11 front seven defenders, understanding that quantity must go hand in hand with quality due to attrition, injuries, etc. In contrast, the Sooners signed seven prospects but only two of them were four stars. In addition, two of the seven (including four star DT Kerrick Huggins) have yet to hit campus due to academic issues. Texas signed no defensive tackles, losing five star A'Shawn Robinson to Alabama right before signing day and just three front seven prospects overall.
The disparity is getting even worse for 2014 and 2015. Oklahoma isn't even a serious contender for quality front seven prospects in Texas any longer and is leaving the Aggies and Horns to fight it out between themselves. However, it's been a one way battle so far. Texas has eight commits from front seven personnel and two of them are four stars; the Aggies have just two commitments but having signed a class of three four-star defensive tackles in 2013, A&M has focused moreso at defensive end in this class. They beat out Texas for Katy Seven Lakes' Jarrett Johnson and are considered the favorites for Arlington Martin's Myles Garrett and Arizona's Qualen Cunningham. They also beat out Texas for DT DeShawn Washington, who is considered the top tackle in the state for 2014. They've also obtained the lead for the best 2015 defensive tackles in the state in Gladewater's Daylon Mack and Cy Falls' Du'Vonte Lampkin.
Not only that, A&M is proving that it can do more with less with its current staff. The Aggies had just one four star in their front seven last season but finished seventh in scoring and rushing defense in the SEC. Texas had four stars at all but TWO spots in its front seven depth chart and finished in the middle of the pack in the Big 12 in scoring defense and eighth in a ten team league in rushing defense. Oklahoma started six players rated as four stars or better by Rivals in 2012 and finished fourth in scoring defense and ninth in rushing defense. Not only that, A&M destroyed the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl last January despite playing a six man front that included a true freshman making his first start (Alonzo Williams).
Mack Brown resurrected Texas in 1998 due in large part to Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams and Bob Stoops won a national title in 2000 with Heisman runner up Josh Heupel. However, once those players left, the Horns and Sooners stayed relevant nationally because of their front seven talent like Casey Hampton, Tommy Harris, and Gerald McCoy. Once Heisman winner Johnny Manziel leaves A&M, the Aggies are well positioned to stay relevant on a national level as well due to their front seven recruiting. All of this is occurring in a state where there is a premium on front seven defensive talent moreso than most places because the state produces so many quality offensive prospects which will continue to have a multiplier effect in recruiting for the dominant program on the field.
And right now, that dominant program is A&M.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis talked with NFL Network's Jeff Darlington Tuesday at the NFL's Rookie Symposium and had some interesting comments about his team's top division rival, the Seattle Seahawks.
Here's what Davis said, courtesy of the NFL Network:
“I think it is a great division. You have a team like Seattle who is coming up. They are building a dynasty over there. They have some good players over there who are eager to win. These guys are starving. We have to really keep that in mind because these guys are coming to take us out. I respect them, just like I respect my team, but we want to win too. We are in it to win. We don’t want to lose, especially after last year. We get all the way to the Super Bowl [and] lose the game. We have to really take it upon our responsibility and put it all out there and play each game like it is our last game.”
What do you think 49ers fans? Is there a dynasty-in-the-making in Seattle or is Davis just paying his respects to the competition?
